It’s a new year and with a year comes the time when people start to make new years resolutions. New years resolutions are little tasks and goals you can set yourself to help make 2022 easier for you. Choose the right resolutions to improve your mental health and wellbeing
Think about last year and are there any things you struggled with. If you found that last year you struggled a little with your mental health and wellbeing, then the new year can be the perfect time to start putting in place little habits you can do to help make managing your stress easier.
Here are some New Years Resolutions To Improve Your Mental Health And Wellbeing:
1. Exercise More
Exercising can do wonders for your mental health. When we exercise the body release endorphins which can help create a relaxed and calm feeling. If you are feeling stressed or tense, then it might be a good idea to try working out, even if it’s just for ten minutes. This can help diffuse the tension and alleviate the stress before it can become any worse.
Better yet, set up a regular exercise routine. It could be an hour in the gym after work, yoga on weekends, or even something as simple as a few sit-ups in the morning. Getting into a regular routine can help improve not only your physical fitness but your overall mental wellness too.
2. Try Some Mindful Breathing and Meditating
One of the best things you can do is just take some time each day to try some mindful reflection. There are plenty of apps and resources to help you with this.
Take some time out of your day and do nothing, just sit somewhere you feel comfortable and focus on doing so slow steady breathing. Steady breathing should help to slow and calm your heart rate and help you feel rejuvenated and relaxed.
3. Find a Calming Hobby
Remember to set some time aside for you this year. It can be tempting to stay and finish that thing for work or spend time at the bar your friends want to go to, but you need to make sure that there is time for you in your schedule.
Try and find a hobby that you can spend some time on that will help you feel calm and relaxed. A lot of people choose something like mindful colouring books, knitting or reading, but it is entirely up to you and what you feel the most comfortable doing.
Spend some time doing this hobby at least once a week and make sure to fully unwind and spend some time where you don’t have to worry, and you just indulge.
4. Set a Regular Sleep Schedule
It’s a good idea to get into a usual sleep schedule. A lot of stress and mental health problems are caused by, or worsened by, not getting a good night’s sleep. On top of this, stress and mental health can make it hard to sleep and you can end up in a vicious cycle.
Try and get used to falling asleep at a usual time and then try and keep this up every day you can. If you know certain things can stop you from falling asleep, get used to stopping using them around an hour before you try and sleep. For example, if you know staring at a blue screen or drinking a caffeinated drink is going to keep you up, set yourself cut off times for when you have to stop using these and start doing something that will help you sleep, like drinking tea or reading a book.
5. Know When Things are Getting To Be Too Much
We can try and prevent stress as much as possible, but sometimes we still end up suffering and our mental health and wellbeing can take a hit because of this. If you feel yourself starting to get stressed and overwhelmed, then you need to know when things are getting to be too much.
When this happens, you need to be able to have a support system in place so that you can walk away from the cause of the stress and have someone there who can help you deal with it and find a way to manage the thing that is causing you distress.
